Ms. Aubree

I am living proof of the quote by Emilie Buchwald, "Children are made readers on the laps of their parents." I remember as a small child, sitting in my mother's lap, and listening to her read Lambert the Sheepish Lion by Bill Peet. The way she would say "Laaaaaammmmmbert" in a sheepish dialect is among my favorite memories of these moments. If you've read the book, you know that it's pretty wordy for a children's book. When asked to read it several times in a night I'm sure she grew tired of it quickly, though she never told me no even after asking over and over. I'm not sure at this moment in time she knew that she was molding me into a reader, I imagine she was simply trying to find a quiet moment with me in the in and outs of a busy day, but I have to thank her for whatever reason it may have been.

In elementary school I learned to read very quickly. I would like to take all the credit and say it's because I'm insanely intelligent, but that wouldn't be the entire truth ;). I believe it goes back to having a mother who read to me and teachers who instilled a love of reading in my life.

This is my sixth year as librarian for Zavalla ISD, and I am so very blessed to have this position. My hope is that my love for reading will rub off on just one child, although I'd prefer many. For many children growing up today, reading is something that parents/grandparents/guardians simply do not have the time to do anymore. This is why every week I take each class and simply read to them. I try to show them that no matter what might be happening in their life, how bad of a day they may be having, that they can always escape and go somewhere else with a book.
